Years Ahead of Schedule - Fiji Records Best-ever International
VA Fiji
has established a new visitor arrival record welcoming close
on 632,000 international visitors across 2010.
Figures
released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics show a total of
631,868 international visitors travelled to the destination
for the 12-month period January-December 2010.
That
figure eclipses the 542,186 total achieved for the same period
in 2009 by more than 16 per cent.
Tourism Fiji CEO,
Josefa Tuamoto said the 2010 result had “effectively
obliterated” previous VA projections set in 2009 when the
destination aimed its sights on attracting 600,000
international visitors by 2012.
Australia again
continued to be the primary source of arrivals to Fiji for the
12 month period with visitation building to 318,185, a 28 per
cent increase over the 248,489 recorded across 2009.
In
other markets, New Zealand visitor numbers reached 97,857, a
7.36 per cent increase over the 90,898 recorded for 2009.
Arrivals from the EEC stayed positive, the 73,043 arrivals
recorded for the 12 month period representing a 1.89 per cent
increase over the 71,731 achieved in 2009.
United
States of America arrivals also increased from 51,592 to reach
53,122, a three per cent year on year increase. Chinese
visitor arrivals continued to increase in 2010, reaching
18,227, a 31.89 per cent growth over the 13,820 achieved for
the same period in 2009.
Provisional arrivals from
India increased by 22.32 per cent from 2375 in 2009 to reach
2905 in 2010.

now contributing 50.4 per cent of all international
arrivals Australian
visitation to Fiji built to 318,185, a 28 per cent increase
over the 248,489 recorded across 2009 and accounting for 50.4
per cent of Fiji’s total international arrivals for the year.
Tourism Fiji Regional Director Australia, Paresh Pant
said the huge increase in Australian visitation numbers was in
fact bigger than the combined total achieved from all other of
Fiji’s source markets.
“This included a last quarter
burst from this market which saw us welcome 86,792 Aussies – a
close on 15 per cent increase for the same period in 2009,” Mr
Pant said.
“We are obviously doing something very
right in this market,”” he said. For

Drink Play’ – TF ‘calls up’ innovative mobile marketing
program Tourism
Fiji’s US regional office has launched an innovative mobile
marketing program using smartphone app technology to help
boost the number of North Americans travelling to Fiji.
The smartphone app is called ‘Eat Drink Play’ which
enables targeted consumers to participate in a series of
travel contests called ‘Getaway Giveaway’
The new ‘Eat
Drink Play’ device fits and can be run on any web screen
device and in any language worldwide.
Tourism Fiji
Regional Director (The Americas), Ili Matatolu said the
audience for the program was in the main the Gen Y
demographic. Also targeted are college alumnis, corporate
groups, social media followers, news outlets and affinity
groups.
“We are embracing many channels to make this a
success, including dedicated websites and social media,” Ms
Matatolu said. “While not totally discounting traditional
distribution platforms, we have to include the smartphone
platform to help us in our strategic goal of “engaging,
entertaining and educating” our targeted consumers on
Fiji.
“Our market research shows that the currently
65.8 million smartphone users in the US have the discretionary
income to be able to afford long haul travel.
“The ‘Eat
Drink Play’ app helps provide us with direct access to these
people.” Ms Matatolu said response from the national
tourist office’s Fiji partners has been very positive with
some aspects of the program already
oversubscribed.
“Web 3.0 technology has become very
important to Tourism Fiji and we will continue to harness new
technology to assist our marketing
efforts. For

Fiji to stage virtual Fiji Me show for third year
running A
“critical component” of its overall North America marketing
strategy, Tourism Fiji will for the third year running stage a
‘virtual’ Fiji Me online industry workshop for its US travel
industry partners this coming Autumn.
Tourism Fiji
Regional Director (The Americas), Ili Matatolu said the 2011
exercise was intended to build on the success achieved with
similar events undertaken in 2009 and 2010.
A key ROI
metric emanating from the 2010 virtual workshop, she said, was
Tourism Fiji’s ability to train 469 travel agents in 42 states
across the US with over 3,000 pieces of Fiji information – and
all in the space of eight hours.
“The average
engagement time with each agent in 2010 was 22 minutes in
which time they were able to download welcome videos and
e-brochures covering a huge area of Fiji’s multi-faceted
tourism offering,” she said.
This ranged from leisure
travel, weddings and honeymoon, soft adventure, scuba diving
and the incentive market “In a traditional marketing sense,
given our limited budgets and manpower, this would prove nigh
on impossible to achieve,” Ms Matatolu said.
“Travel
agents continue to contribute over 70 per cent of long haul
bookings so it is imperative that we continue to reach out and
educate them on Fiji.
“We have a small budget - we
service a big market and harnessing the available technology
platforms we use to achieve our objectives has become a
critical component of our marketing strategy.”

Director, The Americas, Ms Ili Matatolu at ili@tourismfijius.com | | | | Tourism
Fiji to attend Arabian Travel Mart
2011 Tourism
Fiji will once again participate at the Arabian Travel Mart
which takes place in Dubai from 02-05 May 2011.
Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto said he was confident
the new channels opened up at the event last year when the
national tourist office attended for the first time will play
a key role in helping the national tourist office meet its
ambitious tourism targets in 2011 and further diversify market
share beyond its traditional source markets.
"The
Middle East market had long been recognised as an emerging
market for Fiji with strong potential and one that was
extremely relevant within Tourism Fiji’s expansionary approach
to look beyond its traditional source markets,"he
said.
“The biggest competitive advantage for Fiji in
the UAE is the fact entry visas are stamped upon arrival and
the huge variety of airline options to connect to Fiji via
Hong Kong and through Australia offer huge potential for us."
