Now’s your chance: at the 13th Extended Book Night on May 14 on Oranienstraße. Small children, teenagers, and adults can immerse themselves in the world of stories and poetry in very unusual locations, such as grocery stores or subway stations, with readings lasting up to midnight. The DFB Cup of the German Football Federation. In order to be present at the battle for the coveted trophy, a huge number of visitors will come to Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 21. But even fans without tickets can participate in the unique Berlin storybook game, whether in sports bars, beach bars, or at numerous cultural highlights and special events. On top of that, the Theater in Public Viewing will be presented at the Sony Center on the Potsdamer Platz from May 13 to 15. In place of cramped theater seats, audience members can view three performances from the comfort of typical beer garden benches with a drink in hand. So this year, the DMY International Design Festival is placing its focus on the neighboring country of Finland. In addition, the latest from the international design scene will be presented from May 1 to 5 on an exhibition space of 150,000 sq. ft. in the light-flooded hangars of Tempelhof Airport. In what was once the largest amusement park in Europe, no carousel has turned for five years now. But from May 26 to 29, the Theater HAU will be breathing new life into the area with the “Lunapark Berlin”. On May 5, the anniversary festivities begin for “125 Years of the Kurfürstendamm”, including a show location at the Breitscheidplatz at which visitors can learn about the varied history of the famous strolling boulevard through October 15. More at www.familiennacht.de 50th Anniversary of the Construction of the Wall For the fiftieth anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, large-format “wall pictures” will indicate the its former course from June 15 to August 13. At thirteen locations, the 8 foot high and 11 foot wide black-and-white pictures will depict scenes from the time around the date of August 13, 1961, which would change the everyday life of millions for many years to come. More at www.50jahremauerbau.de Exhibition Highlight for the Kleist Year 2011 A highpoint for this, the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of writer Heinrich von Kleist, is the exhibition “Kleist: Crisis and Experiment”. From May 21, 2011 through January 29, 2012, the show will deal with the life and works of the famous German author at two separate locations: in the Ephraim Palace in Berlin and in the Kleist Museum in Frankfurt an der Oder.
