Twenty-seven Thousand Puzzle Pieces
Berlin’s biggest puzzle is now finished. It took nine years for restorers in the Pergamon Museum to reconstruct around twenty-seven thousand stone fragments of the monumental sculptures of Tell Halaf. The statues of animals and gods were discovered by chance in Syria in 1899, destroyed by a bomb in Berlin during the Second World War, and stored in the basement of the Pergamon Museum for around sixty years.
