2011 Bucket List: Top 5 Adventures for the new year

Go To Hells Canyon – Drop down into the deepest river gorge in North America, Hell’s Canyon. Jet boat rides on this stretch of the Snake River are highly recommended for adventure seekers of every age. Hiking, horseback riding, rafting, fishing and many other forms of recreation are abundant.

Get Lost in the Frank Church “River of No Return Wilderness” – Included within the boundaries of the Salmon-Challis National Forest lies the 1.3 million acre Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area , the largest wilderness area in the Continental United States. Rugged and remote, this country offers adventure, solitude and breathtaking scenery.  Float the wild & scenic Salmon River or the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, travel on horseback to a back country lodge or try your luck on a hunting or fishing excursion. Professional outfitters and guides offer trips of various lengths and interests into the wilderness area and trails are well marked for hiking.

Fish Like Hemingway – Ernest Hemingway spent quite a bit of time in the Sun Valley area, fishing and reveling in the surrounding beauty. The fishing areas around Sun Valley, Silver Creek, Copper Basin, the Big Lost and the Big and Little Wood Rivers, are still popular fishing spots today. Some consider Sun Valley the divine destination for fly-fishing, while the Snake, Clearwater, Salmon and many other rivers and alpine lakes are also teaming with fish just waiting to be caught. Many Idaho Outfitters and Guides specialize in fishing trips throughout Idaho or give it a go on your own.

Ride the Rapids -  With over 3,000 miles of whitewater, Idaho offers adventure opportunities for everyone. Whether your taste runs from a white-knuckled roller coaster trip or a mellow scenic float, a river awaits you in the Gem State. All levels, abilities and time on the water can be accommodated. Choose anything from a half-day float on the Main Payette River to a multi-day trip on one of the top 10 whitewater rivers in the world, the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Don’t you owe it to yourself to try something incredible and take advantage of the most plentiful whitewater in the United States?

Follow the Falls – When travelling through the State, seek out some of Idaho’s waterfalls along the way. Tucked away on a mountain trail or dominating a canyon view, these waterfalls are each unique and impressive.
Eastern Idaho: A popular starting point for hikers, Cave Falls near Ashton is only 20 feet high but stretches 250 feet across the Falls River in the southwest corner of Yellowstone. Two of the most spectacular waterfalls in Idaho include 114-foot Upper Mesa Falls with its boardwalks and viewing platforms and the nearby 65-foot Lower Mesa Falls near Ashton, ID.
Northern Idaho: Moyie Falls near Bonners Ferry is a spectacular sight packed tightly within the canyon walls of the Moyie River. The Moyie Bridge hovers between the canyon walls, suspended 450 feet over the whitewater. Shadow Falls (25 ft.) and Fern Falls near Kingston, ID are on a tributary of Yellow Dog Creek and can be found by taking a short walk (100-300 yards) on a trail. They are best viewed in spring and early summer.
South-Central Idaho: At Thousand Springs near Hagerman, watch as springs thought to be the re-emergence of the Big Lost River erupt from rocky canyon walls and gush to the river below. More springs bubble up from below creating beautiful blue pools.
